How to Make a Minion Crochet Beanie

"I just want to make beautiful things even if nobody cares."

This post is on my draft for almost 2 weeks! Finally I am able to post it na.

I've first made a minion crochet beanie for my 1 year old nephew because it is his favorite cartoon character aside from cars. I always wanted to have a step by step image guide about it but having a difficult time on how to write the terms on crochet. Now, I am making 4 pieces for 2 set of twins. Two for my twins and the other two are for my twin cousins in the province.

First, you must know the basics of crochet, like double crochet, slip st, chains and so on. Arrange the things that you will be needing.

Yarns, Hook and Markers

Hooks (I used a 5.0 mm)
Markers (you can also use small safety pins)
Yarns (I bought mine at my fave Yarn Store in Rosario, Pasig)
Scissors

Next, look for an easy pattern. I found the right beanie pattern for beginners here. It's for adult size and there are instructions on how to make it bigger or smaller depending on what you like. The pattern is complete with Stitches and Terms so you can fully understand the instructions. You can also watch her video tutorial if you can't follow the text pattern. You can alter this pattern if you wanted to design it with a flower of cartoon characters.

Here is my step by step guide with images.

Round 4: ch 2, *2dc into next st, 1 dc into next 3 sts, rep from * around to the last 3 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next 2 sts, sl st into top of ch-2. (40 sts)

Round 5: ch 2, *2dc into next st, 1 dc into next 4 sts, rep from * around to the last 4 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next 3 sts, sl st into top of ch-2. (48 sts)

Round 6: ch 2, *2dc into next st, 1 dc into next 5 sts, rep from * around to the last 5 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next 4 sts, sl st into top of ch-2. (56 sts)

If you want a larger beanie you can still increase the size, just follow the pattern. The one that I am making is for one year old. So I am skipping that step. You can also decrease the size if you are making one for babies, you just skip one or few last rounds.

Round 7 to 9: Using a black yarn, ch 2, 1 dc into each st around to the end, sl st into top of ch-2.

Round 10 to 14: Again using a yellow yarn, ch 2, 1 dc into each st around to the end, sl st into top of ch-2.

After you finish the beanie, you can decide on whatever design that you want. For this tutorial, I am making a Minion Crochet Beanie with Ear Flaps.

Ear Flaps
1. From the last stitch, count 14 ch to the right (from that point count 7 ch, left and right then add markers).
2. Repeat the step on the left side.
3. From the 1st marker on the right, ch 2, 1 dc on every ch until the last marker.
4. Turnover, ch 2, make a decrease (add one strand from the hook, insert to the next ch add another strand from the hook pull it until you have 3 strands on the hook, add another strand from the hook and pull it on the 2 strands you will have 2 strands remaining, add 1 strand from the hook, insert on the next ch, add another 1 strand from the hook, you will have 4 strands, add another strand from the hook and pull all 4 strands).

I know it is difficult to explain, hehehe. If you are having a difficult time doing a decrease, you can refer to this site.

5. Make 1 dc in every ch until the last 2 ch, then another decrease.

The ear flaps should look like a triangle in shape. So every time you turn it over it will decrease on the number on chains per row.

Eye

I am making the character of Carl or Stuart. Meaning, I am only making one eye per crochet beanie.

Using a Black Yarn, ch 5, sl st into 1st ch to form a ring.
Round 1: ch 2, (working over yarn tail) 15 dc into ring, sl st into top of ch-2. (16sts)
Round 2: ch 2, *2dc into next st, 1 dc into next st, rep from * around to the last st, sl st into top of ch-2. (24 sts)
Round 3: (Using a Gray Yarn) ch 2, *2dc into next st, 1 dc into next 2 sts, rep from * around to the last 2 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next st, sl st into top of ch-2. (32 sts)
Round 4: (Using a Gray Yarn) ch 2, *2dc into next st, 1 dc into next 3 sts, rep from * around to the last 3 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next 2 sts, sl st into top of ch-2. (40 sts)
Last is Round 5: (Still using a Gray Yarn) ch 2, *2dc into next st, 1 dc into next 4 sts, rep from * around to the last 4 sts, 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next 3 sts, sl st into top of ch-2. (48 sts)

The eye have a 3D effect, but you can just make a simple eye by adding a few dc on every rounds. So for the filling of the eye, I have a lot of excess yarns that I didn't throw away.

Fill the eye with just enough yarns. Add markers so the eye will not move on its place.

I did a normal stitch, you can also do a back-stitch. At the above image, you can see the back of the stitched eye on the beanie.

Finish the edges with a sl st on every ch.

For the braided hair on the ear flaps, I used different colors of yarns: yellow, gray and black. Make 3 sections then do a normal braid.

(excuse the excess yarns hehehe)

I hope you had fun on making the Minion Crochet Beanie as much as I do.
'Till next crochet project!
